Making Moon Water
If you’ve been circling the witchcraft sphere for a while you’ve most likely heard of moon water, or seen the online memes of witches forgetting to put theirs on the windowsill until the very last minute. However, since it is incredibly simple to make, we often forget to properly imbue it with our intention in order to make it more effective in our spell work.
In the past, one way this water was made was by rowing out onto a body of water that held the moon’s reflection. Using a cup attached to a staff length stick, you would stretch the cup over the water where the moon’s reflection glimmered, dipping their vessel into the water. This was then used for potions elixirs, and healing remedies.
“When water is still like a mirror, it can behold the moon.” -Rumi
Now while I don’t expect everyone who want’s to make moon water to charter a canoe onto their nearest lake, I think this story is important as it shows the ritualistic intent behind making moon water, which gives it far more power than simply filling up a cup with tap water and setting it on the windowsill to forget about. I can’t tell you how many times I did this at the beginning of my practice, then began to resent the process entirely, as nothing felt different from the water I’d had when I started. So today I wanted to break down this process and my most effective strategy for making moon water, for it truly is simple and budget friendly, but is extremely valuable in your spells and rituals.

Firstly, what is moon water?
At its most basic, it’s water placed in a sacred vessel that’s charged in the light of the full moon to imbue the water with the moon’s properties. This includes emotions, fertility, and intuition. However, moon water does not just have to be made during its full phase. Each phase of the moon has different associations, and the moon also cycles through each zodiac sign over roughly a 2 day period. By utilizing this information, you can craft moon water no matter what phase the moon is in, that will be both personal to your practice and effective in your spellwork.
What is your purpose for creating this water? Is it to store and have on hand for future spellwork? Is it for scrying or drinking? Settle on this intention first so you can best prepare the following steps.
You will need a vessel to store your moon water. Glass or crystal is preferred to prevent molding in water collected from outside sources, and even for filtered tap water (note that mason jars or any jar with a metal closure is not recommended for sea water as it will rust!). If you plan to drink this water, make sure you use a vessel that is only marked for drinking–not labeling my jars is also a mistake I made, and continue to make, in my practice!
If you are non imbibing this water, think about the type of water you’d want to collect. What is most accessible to you? The sea? A lake or a stream? What are the magical properties of those bodies of water, do they align with your original intent?
Next, consider the current phase of the moon, and the zodiac sign it is currently in. Is it suitable for your moon water, or do you have to wait for a particular phase? If it is the latter, I’d highly recommend collecting the water and setting a reminder to yourself to set it out on the correct night.
Now the biggest step before you set out your moon water–intent. The light of the moon and the associated water and sign will imbue this water, but I found the most effective way to hyper focus its properties to my specific needs is to infuse it with my intent. Some options you can use for this are drawing sigils onto the bottle, or drawing a sigil onto paper and placing the bottle on top of it. You can sit with the bottle in your hands, closing your eyes and willing your desired outcome into the water through your hands. You can chant and sing over the water, letting your breath and energy vibrate through, and so much more.
Here is the breakdown of an example for making moon water that I used in a YouTube tutorial you can find here: Fablepagan Youtube Channel
My intent is to aid my communication and smooth over technical glitches during mercury retrograde. I wish to drink this water in my daily tea, so I will be using filtered tap water, and a crystal/ glass bottle large enough to be able to add a small amount of this water to my tea each day during mercury retrograde (which lasts for about 3 weeks at a time.)
The day I created this water was on a full moon in Gemini, the zodiac sign ruled by mercury, that is associated with communication, curiosity and intellect. Combining the attributes of the full moon along with the zodiac sign it resides in will help enhance the properties of this magical water which will make it easier to will my intentions into it during casting.
Once my bottle was filled, I left the cap open and held the bottle to my lips, humming and chanting the word, ‘communicate’ while visualizing myself pushing through communication barriers and technical glitches often associated with mercury retrograde. I visualized conversations flowing smoothly, breezing through computer snags and any misread texts, and speaking clearly and intently. Once I had this visualization in my mind, once I felt it vibrating through the water, I placed the cap into the bottle and set it on the windowsill in the view of the moon overnight. The next morning, I will set this in a dark, cool place, like a pantry or cabinet, (this is even more helpful to do if you are using unfiltered water like rain or pond water to prevent molding!)
FAQ: What happens if I forget to grab my bottle until the next day when the sun is up?
At the very least, the heat of the sun may sink into the bottle, but as moon water is ineffective without your intent, so too is sun water (and many other magical workings). Your will and intent was infused in the water, cathcing the light of the moon within for its specific purpose, and so it will be. But if you’d like to be sure, you can set an early alarm to retrieve your moon water from the sill or wherever you left it!
As a sea witch, I work closely with the phases of the moon as a representation of cycles in my life and practice, and adding layers to it like the zodiac sign and type of water has truly made all the difference in my moon water and how I use it!
BONUS: I’ve included an optional chant for you to use when enchanting your moon water below!
I bless the water within this glass
Absorb the light the moon doth cast
When retrieved at moonlight’s end
Energy of moonlight be imbedded within
As I will it, so it is.
