Sea Witchcraft in Puerto Rico
After nearly ten years, I finally returned to tropical waters and Puerto Rico for a much needed break from the mundane. To a sea witch, nothing is quite as thrilling as visiting an island–you are close to the ocean wherever you go! But this trip brought a variety of new experiences that will shape the course of my practice as I know it. Since I covered both the east and west coasts during my two week stay, I have compiled some of the best places for Sea Witchcraft in Puerto Rico, as well as the kinds of spellwork I was drawn to at each location.

COMBATE BEACH:
The first beach stop on my trip was a shoreline of calm and gentle waters. Combate beach is a local’s favorite near Cabo Rojo, and has the calm atmosphere of a hidden paradise. To see the beach itself, you walk through a copse of trees with interlocking branches high above your head that make you feel like you’re stepping into another world. The water itself was a beautiful turquoise blue with that perfect peachy sand that melts between your toes as you step towards the water. Friendly fish swim around your ankles as you wade in to welcome you! We did have a large jellyfish drift by us as well. You’ll quickly see that jellyfish were a large theme of this trip for me! This beach held the energy of reflection. It is a great place to bring your favorite divination tools and read by the shoreline.

BUYE BEACH:
This was my favorite beach, hands down. Something about it just felt so welcoming, and yet so secluded and serene. The water is warm –I also spotted a few odd jellies in the water so take care when swimming– and so clear. There is only a small strip of sand between the sea and the jungle, and some of the trees even branch straight into the water. I chose this beach to bring my tail for an amazing photoshoot. Then, I went back three times for spellwork and soaking in the energy. I added quite a few shells to my collection, and some pieces of bleached coral that had washed up on shore.
This is my reminder to you to make sure you give to the ocean before you take, and be mindful of what you take–even the smallest smells can be homes for someone! During a sunrise visit, I was also greeted by a trio of very friendly fish, and one large crab who was not happy I blocked his swimming path (we worked it out on the remix). This was also the beach we went to on my last day and I remember floating in the water with my spirits, soaking in the peaceful energy to bring back whenever life got too stressful. I did the most sea witchcraft in Puerto Rico at this beach for sure!

BOQUERON LIGHTHOUSE:
We hiked quite a ways to the top of this lighthouse, but the walk was incredible. We made a few pit stops because I kept wandering into offshoots to admire the mangroves and iguanas! The lighthouse was closed during our visit, though we got to wander outside and around the cliff edges. It was there I spotted these stunning caves across the way, and even MORE iguanas chilling in the sun! On the walk back, I felt the urge to look down, and standing right between my feet was a hag stone. For context, I had been looking for one in my hometown for months and was about to give in and buy one online. I wound up finding three more on this trip in various locations on the island!

OLD SAN JUAN:
While this wasn’t a Puerto Rico Beach, it was definitely worth mentioning on this list. Firstly I’m giving myself a pat on the back for walking over ten miles. But to be fair, in a place as beautiful as old San Juan, it’s pretty easy to do. Located on a jutting eastern point of the island, it stands out instantly for its colorful buildings, an array of restaurants and bars, and of course, the piragua vendors! (I could live off of them). At the top of the hill is the featured attraction, the Castillo San Felipe Del Morro.
The fort is six stories (you see how I got my steps in), with gorgeous views at the top and one triangle staircase that was determined to take out my knees! It was amazing to see the history and connection within the fort, as well as the energy of community that spread throughout the town itself. Even the local cats came to hang out with us during our third piragua break of the day!

CRASH BOAT BEACH:
Many travel sites and blogs boast this as one of the best Puerto Rico Beaches on the island, and I would agree. Located on the west coast in Aguadilla, if you want to swim with amazing species of fish without paying for an expensive tour, this is the place to do it. You can dive off of the colorful piers, snorkel, rent jet ski’s, and charter small boats. The water is some of the clearest I’ve ever seen and the fish are ridiculously friendly. We had stingray and baby sharks swim in our path. Lifeguards on the pier also pointed out the turtles in the distance!
My biggest regret on this excursion is that I did not bring my tail. Honestly, I was too enraptured by the nature around me to remember it! Next time, for sure. The concrete pillars have holes in some places, which nature has wasted no time in filling with life. If you look closely, you can see the fish and coral taking shelter in the nooks and crannies. There are stunning crabs, barnacles, and even huge mats of soft coral that have made their home on the pillars. Just be mindful about what you touch! That whole day was such a thrill, I barely left the water the entire time we were there! Though, to be fair, that isn’t an unusual occurrence for me.

LA PARGUERA & BIO BAY:
One of our last excursions was a sunset boat swim and tour of bio bay, one of Puerto Rico’s three bays with bioluminescent algae. I’ve always loved boat rides, and sunset /sunrise are the times of day and when I feel the most magical. The bay itself was stunning, though images were harder to capture on camera than it was in person. The weather was amazing! The night sky was so clear we could see satellites, and the lightning on the eastern side of the bay. We splashed in the water, stirring up the luminescence, then a jellyfish stung me on the leg (I told you there was a theme)!
Fortunately, the jellyfish in this bay are not harmful. The sting actually reminded me of a cat scratch with more of a burn. If you have an allergy to stings, consider bringing some Benadryl or other allergy relief to lessen the swelling.
All that being said, I would definitely do this excursion again. Jellyfish represent interconnectedness, going with the flow of life, and a shift in your path. And it’s no surprise that the first time I get stung by a jellyfish is right around this time. Saturn is shifting into Aries, marking the start of my Saturn return. To me, this was a reminder of upcoming change. I can either pull against it, or I can let the currents guide me, and lead me to where I am meant to be.
