Working with Mermaids
For the purposes of this particular post, when I refer to mermaids, I am talking about beings that are half human, half fish. There are many debates on whether ‘Siren’ and ‘Mermaid’ can be used interchangeably, or if a Siren is just a more ‘wicked’ version of Mermaids. But what are mermaids really like in a spiritual sense? What does it feel like? What can you expect from working with them and what are some ways they can aid your spiritual practice?
There is no one answer to any of these questions, nor is it easy to explain. Mermaids, like the water itself, are constantly flowing and changing. My social media gives a small glimpse into some ways mermaids have been involved in my spiritual practice, but their ‘responses’ are almost always dramatized and should never be taken as fact. Unless I am communicating with them through tarot or deep in pathworking, I receive messages from them as I would with any other deity- in the form of signs omens, or emotions.
Their voices, when I do what them, are like the rippling and effervescent bubbles of a babbling brook, often so indistinguishable from my own I have to sit with myself to determine if it was my own emotional response, theirs, or a combination . Because of this, divination and journaling play heavy roles in this for my practice. This brings me to the first thing mermaids have helped me with.

Deep water work-
At the risk of running into heavy metaphor, this is how I see deep water work: The things I have yet to process, the aches and trust issues from people in my past, or my own experiences, lie at the bottom of a well, the ocean, a pond, some form of water that runs deep. I have to dive down in order to really see and process them. However, I cannot always hold my breath for as long as I would like, I kick back to the surface before the weight of it all pulls me under for good. That is where mermaids come in. Some myths claim that a kiss from a mermaid can save you from drowning, allow you to breathe underwater with them.
Trust has to be involved in this process, as they are also known for taking delight in drowning mortals purely because they can. Even with their trust, this is a scary process. It is not pleasant to drag up old memories from the deep, to scrape off the barnacles and slime and examine them anew. You may find these things have been dragging you down like an anchor, and it is time to let go. Or you may discover an abandoned hope or lost dream that needs to be saved. You may not find anything your first few tries, and have to try again. But with mermaids by your side, it makes the process run a lot smoother. I currently offer mermaid channeled readings that help with this process.

Solidifying your connection to water–
Any water spirit can help deepen your connection with the element. They have furthered my connection based on how much water magic I now do in my practice. I bless my water before I drink it, I do more bath and shower rituals, I leave them an offering of fresh or salt water nearly every day. I’m more aware of the cleansing process when I wash my hands, or its movement as I swirl it through a cup or bowl. I study the water and their myths, and when I use online resources, the algorithm’s make sure that type of content comes up. There is always something new to learn and I eagerly await to go in the next direction it pulls me in.

Emotional healing-
Again water…emotions..it goes hand in hand. This doesn’t mean diving into the depths of your soul to sort through it before you can be happy. Emotional healing is a past, present, and forward moving journey. It’s letting the thing that heavily affected you before, roll off your shoulders like raindrops the next time. Or recognizing your emotional needs, that they are valid, and addressing them in whatever way is healthy and helps you. It’s giving yourself space to grow and make mistakes, and make them again without berating yourself for it.
Healing comes with its own set of uncomfortable challenges and waters to navigate. mermaids don’t come in, wave a magic shell wand and make everything okay- they show you the lessons and let you learn them, no matter how many times.
Dream magic-
I am at the point where I can tell when a dream is pure coincidence fabricated by my subconscious mind to work out an issue, or if it is a message directly from my watery friends, but it took a long time to get to that point. It isn’t something they regularly do unless I prompt it or the message is urgent. If you have trouble dreaming, this may not be a way you chose to work with mermaids, and you can skip to the next section. I have always been a VIVID dreamer. My dreams have been the catalyst for many of my novels, and as bizarre as they are, they are a form of escape into another realm that I absolutely love.
Inviting mermaids into your dreamscapes can also prevent emotional heartache. This is a great time to listen for messages and spend some time in the morning interpreting or at least writing down your dream for later. Pro tip– if, like me, you can’t write as fast as you think, use the notes app on your phone or another electronic device. I would’ve forgotten so many dreams otherwise, and in the new world of technology, it’s better to use it now and write it out later. This can also be turned into a ritual to relive the dream and the messages you received and discuss and clarify with the mermaids further through tarot or other divination methods.

Glamor magic-
Glamor is the magical art of protecting a certain aspect of yourself to the rest of the world. Mermaids are beings of incredible beauty, allure, and vanity. There are hundreds of depictions of them sitting on rocks combing their hair, weaving seashells into the tresses, of their song luring sailors to their doom (again this is also a debate of mermaids vs. sirens mostly when it comes to Greek culture). But glamor is not strictly related to beauty. You do not need to have long flowing hair to enchant it like a net to catch abundance. You do not need a great singing voice to make your business pitch successful. All you need is a bit of glamor magic. Most choose to do this with their makeup. If you are putting on makeup with a specific intent, it can indeed change your whole vibe.

Confidence building-
Mermaids….don’t really give a hoot if you believe in them or not, if you like them or not. There has never been one story or myth I have heard of where a mermaid was insecure. Even in the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale, the little mermaid was so sure of her devotion to the prince that she never wavered in her quest to be with him, and even when he chose another, refused to take his life. Her devotion and resolve were firm and unwavering like a boulder cemented to the sea floor.
While they can be fickle beings in terms of their emotional capacity (they don’t have much empathy when it comes to human problems as our life and problems are so fleeting) they never lose sight of who they are and what they can offer, and that in itself is a great principle to live by. Sometimes just being in their presence has the capacity to take me from feeling ‘blah’ to being ‘that beotch’ in seconds, and holding that positive image of yourself is also a form of glamor magic in itself. It can naturally make you more magnetic and alluring. By allowing yourself to embody the qualities of a mermaid, you may find things coming to you more than you thought possible.
Working with mermaids has changed my life for the better. I truly would not be where I am today without their guidance, which is why I praise them so heavily on social media. I want everyone to know these beautiful water spirits, and see the amazing changes they can bring to your life. if you would like to meet one yourself, I offer a free introduction ritual with my newsletter to get you started on your own magical mermaid journey.
